Shanti Niketan Primary SCHOOL

About THE sCHOOL

Shree Shanti Niketan Primary School was established in 1990 (B.S. 2046) in Sunderbazar, Municipality-6, Lamjung and currently has about 62 students enrolled in their five classes. In the past, they have been recognized as having one of the highest passing rates in the region. Students in classes 4 and 5 are required to take computer classes, however, they do not have access to any computer equipment to use for their practical lessons. Since the ePaath provides interactive lessons in Maths, Science, and English for classes 2 to 6, the school staff and students are very excited to have the latest computer systems in their school library. A new room will be constructed within the next month where all the six terminals will be placed.

Project Partner: Sangsangai

The Nepal-based office of Sangsangai was initially established by a group of students from St. Xavier's School six years ago which was registered in the US as a charitable organization (501c3) in 2016. The organization is dedicated to redeveloping villages in various parts of Nepal destroyed by the catastrophic earthquake of 2015, using a holistic approach that considers the need for housing reconstruction, infrastructure, economic development, and environmental sustainability. The co-founders are Natasha Wozniak and Bibek K Pandit. More details on the organization is available at www.sang-sangai.org.

The implementation

After a detailed evaluation of the two schools in Lamjung, the Shree Shanti Niketan Elementary school in Sundarbazar-6 was chosen as the beneficiary school. Bibek Pandit was instrumental in collecting the information of the potential schools and sending it to the eBlackboard team in the US. He also initiated the dialogue with the Principal and computer teacher of the beneficiary school. After several telephone conversations with Mr. Pandit and the school staff, a tentative implementation plan was drafted and agreed upon. The key aspects of the plan included roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in this project, contributions to be made, collection and transportation of the computer equipment from Kathmandu to the beneficiary school, and coordinating a dry-run of installation in Kathmandu.

With the help of The Rotary Club of Kathmandu West and Mr. Shankar Pokharel a dry run of the installation of the complete computer system was performed in the Sangsangai office in Kathmandu. During the dry-run Bibek Pandit and his colleague followed through the steps outlined in the 'Installation Manual' very diligently prepared by eBlackboard's Team Lead Avideep Pradhan. This exercise turned out to be very productive and greatly helped the Sangsangai Team to understand how the system works in the server/router configuration. It also provided them the confidence to install the system correctly in the beneficiary school in Lamjung.

All six Raspberry Pi systems were purchased configured, tested in the eBlackboard's Office in the US and sent to Nepal. Additional fund was provided to Sangsangai to purchase four sets of new monitors and six sets of external peripherals in Nepal, which included: monitors, keyboards, mice, and speakers. Sangsangai organization contributed towards the purchase of two new monitors and made arrangements to transport all the computer equipment to the beneficiary school in Lamjung.

On November 27th 2017, Bibek Pandit with the help of Pradip Khatiwada installed two computer terminals in one corner of the school's library and provided a short demo of the ePaath software. A short training was provided by Bibek Pandit to the computer and science teachers after the remaining four terminals were added to the eLab when the school provided additional space and furniture. Ms. Usha Gurung who teaches computer science course and the students of the beneficiary school are specially excited to start learning in the new set of computer terminals.
