SHREE DIL PRIMARY SCHOOL

About THE sCHOOL

The beneficiary school is an elementary school established in 1976 B.S. and has a total
of 55 students from grades 1-5. The school is 4-hour drive from Kathmandu valley, on
the way to Pokhara and is few miles away from the Bandipur town. The school was chosen based on its remoteness, absence of any computers used for learning purpose and their inability to attract any potential ICTbased projects in future. However, it will receive a lot of support in the operation and maintenance of the computer lab from the Local
Development Center and Rotary Club of Patan West. This lifecycle management of the project is very crucial during the first few years.

Project PartnerS

There are two Project Partners for this project - Godavari Alumni Association (GAA) and Rotary Club of Patan West (RCPW). GAA is a social, non-political, not-for-profit voluntary organization established in 1965. Its motto is ‘Live for God, Lead for Nepal’. GAA actively participates in many charitable causes and it generates funds from alumni of St.Xavier's and St. Mary's Schools. Mr. Bhoo Arun Malla, President of GAA and Dr. Shirish KC, Secretary of the GAA Secretariat have been instrumental in coordinating the project at the local level, which required fund collection from local donor, procuring monitors, accessories and UPS and arranging transportation and installation program among others. Dr. Madan Piya of RCPW worked very closely with the school administration to make the computer lab room ready for installation, which included getting a new set of furniture.

KEY SPONSORS

The funding for the purchase of six sets of Raspberry Pi computers is generously provided by Maya Mischler which she received through a fund drive at her school - Penn Alexander School in Philadelphia, USA. Similarly, the purchase of monitors, accessories and an UPS were made possible by contribution from Mr. Gopal Patel, honorary consulate of Singapore.

The GAA purchased 19" LCD monitors, an UPS and accessories such as keyboards, mice and headphones as well as arranged the transportation. All six sets of computers were quality tested in Philadelphia, USA by Maya and her team to ensure ePaath, the main digital learning tool for grades 2-8, function without any issue. The GAA President, members of the GAA Secretariat and Dr. Madan Piya were involved in the installation of the computers in the school's lab. The room on the left was provided for the establishment of eBlackboard computer lab.

After five hours drive to Bandipur, Tanahun, the installation team led by Bhoo Arun Malla reached the school just past noon on April 1, 2019. They offloaded the equipment from the van and carried it to the room designated as computer lab and started the installation process.

The installation basically consisted of connecting the raspberry Pi to the monitor using the HDMI to VGA converter cable and the keyboard and mice to the USB ports of raspberry pi. Two headphones are connected to an audio splitter which goes into a 3.5 mm video/audio output in the Pi. This effectively allows two students to listen to the ePaath activities simultaneously. Since some of the GAA Secretariat members had previously performed installation in another school in Ramechhap, they didn't have any issue completing the installation quickly.

All six terminals, loaded with ePaath content were ready to go an hour after the installation started! The terminals were powered by grid electricity supply which was hooked to the UPS. In case of power disruption the UPS will automatically start the warning signal giving the students about 15 minutes to shutdown all the terminals. This will safeguard the operating system as well as the ePaath software loaded in the microSD card.

A handful of adults got lucky to test drive the computer terminals right after installation. Since the school was not in session they were not able to provide the intended training to the teachers. They will make another visit to the school in future to train the teachers and provide them with the necessary lesson planning and monitoring tools to effectively operationalize the computer lab from next session.

the implementation was a success
